We write in short, clear sentences wherever we can — in the plainest language we can manage.

We write in gender-neutral language, without asterisks or colons inside words. The reason is an audible one: many screen readers speak those characters aloud. In German, “Nutzer:innen” becomes “Nutzer colon innen”. Instead we look for wordings that include everyone and can be read aloud without stumbling.

We write our texts ourselves. Artificial intelligence is used only for editing, proofreading and translation.

In longer texts we set the central statements in bold. Anyone with little energy or little time can find the core without reading everything. Bold here is not emphasis but a signpost.

Words that need explaining are underlined in a handwritten stroke. They lead to the glossary, where the term is explained in full. When you touch the word, the short version also appears: in the margin on pages that have one, otherwise as a box below the paragraph. Neither covers anything — the sentence stays fully readable.

One thing matters here: that margin note is an addition. The underlined word is an ordinary link. By keyboard, with a screen reader and without JavaScript it leads to the glossary just the same.

The prose is set in Spectral, a serif typeface made for reading on screen. Everything that labels is set in IBM Plex Sans, created for technical documentation. Both are licensed under the SIL Open Font License and are served from the same server as these pages. Why does that matter? If they came from a third party, your IP address would be sent there on every visit.

There is little motion, and what there is means something. If your operating system is set to reduce motion, everything stands still.

• It sets no cookies of its own and stores nothing on your device by itself. The video frame on the PapoNox page only loads when you click it yourself; see below.
• It runs no traffic measurement and no analytics.
• It loads nothing from third parties — no maps, no social network buttons, no advertising or counting scripts. The video on the PapoNox page is an exception — and it only loads when you click it; described below.
• It uses no contact form.

The project page for PapoNox carries a video hosted on YouTube. The video frame loads only when you click it yourself. Until then no connection to YouTube is made — not even a preview image is fetched from there. As long as you do not click, no data is sent to YouTube.

Only when you start the video does Google receive your IP address and possibly process information about your device; Google’s privacy policy applies to that. A note about it appears on the page itself, next to the video.

The video has subtitles, and the full transcript with timestamps sits below the video frame. It is text on the page, so it can be read with a screen reader without starting the video.

We would rather have served the video ourselves. That is planned as soon as the file exists at a size that also works over slow connections.

As with any visit to a website, the server hosting these pages processes technically necessary access data: IP address, time, file requested, browser identification sent. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in technical operation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
