An association for human-centred AI research
The association “AI Research Institute for People” is a non-profit association based in Vienna, established under the Austrian Associations Act 2002 and aligned with non-profit status under §§ 34 ff of the Federal Fiscal Code. It is not profit-oriented.
Our self-understanding
Shaped by those affected
The association’s chairperson is blind himself. People with disabilities actively shape the association’s research — as equal partners on an equal footing, not merely as its subject.
Purpose of the association
The purpose of the association is to promote science and research, education, and assistance for people with disabilities and socially disadvantaged groups — in particular through:
- research, development and communication of human-centred artificial intelligence to support people with disabilities and to promote digital participation;
- promotion of research in the fields of accessibility, assistive technologies, AI ethics, AI safety, data protection and algorithmic fairness;
- education and communication of knowledge about artificial intelligence and its effects on people’s lives;
- charitable support for people with disabilities and socially disadvantaged people in accessing information technologies.
Research results are made available to the public promptly — in particular through open-access publications, freely licensed software and public events.
Bodies of the association
The structure of the association follows the statutes and the Associations Act 2002.
General Assembly
Supreme body; consists of the members, meets at least once a year, also electronically or hybrid.
Board
Governing body of two to five people; manages affairs and represents the association externally.
Auditors
Two people review the association’s financial management; independent of the board.
Scientific Advisory Board
Advisory body of at least three experts; supports the research professionally.
Arbitration Body
Internal conciliation body, formed ad hoc only in the event of disputes.
Board
The board is elected by the General Assembly; the term of office is four years.
Petar Nikolic
Represents the association externally and manages day-to-day affairs.
Dejan Nikolic
Responsible for the proper financial management of the association.
The board can be expanded — without amending the statutes — by a deputy chairperson and a secretary.

The full statutes govern the purpose, membership, bodies and finances of the association. They can be requested from the board at any time.
